TCF Poultry Program

Where rabbits help children learn, communities connect, and wellness grows

The poultry flock at The Community Farm (TCF) offers one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways for people of all ages to get involved with livestock. Chickens and other poultry are approachable, useful, and full of personality, making them a natural fit for youth projects, educational programs, and hands-on farm learning.

Our poultry program gives youth and adults the opportunity to learn about bird care, breeding, showing, and the many important roles poultry play on a working farm. Whether someone is completely new to poultry or already has experience with birds, the program provides a welcoming place to learn, participate, and connect.

Learning Through Poultry

The TCF flock includes a variety of show-quality birds that participants of all ages can work with and exhibit at local poultry shows. Youth ages 8–18 may also participate through 4-H poultry projects, gaining valuable experience in animal care, responsibility, and livestock management.

From the beginning, the rabbit program has been built on the idea that animals can help teach, comfort, and connect people.

Participants in the poultry program learn about:

  • Poultry breeding and genetics
  • Poultry showing and exhibition
  • Bird care and flock management
  • Responsible livestock stewardship
  • Simply enjoying and interacting with feathered friends

A Home for Roosters

One unique part of the TCF Poultry Program is our commitment to providing a safe home for roosters. The farm frequently accepts unadoptable roosters and birds from local shelters, giving them a place where they can live safely and continue to serve a purpose within the farm community

These birds are not viewed as unwanted extras. They are part of the life of the farm and help teach participants about compassion, stewardship, and the value of giving animals a meaningful place.

Roles of Poultry on the Farm

The poultry flock contributes to the farm in many ways beyond education and showing. Our birds play an active role in the health and function of the farm by helping with:

  • Natural pest control, reducing insects around the farm
  • Fertilizer production for gardens and fields
  • Feather collection for local crafters and fly-tying enthusiasts
  • Educational outreach for visitors and youth programs

This makes poultry an important part of daily life at TCF and a great introduction to the many ways livestock support a farm community.
